Why pharmacists chose Ebonyi as the location for the Pharma Park project

The construction of Salt City Pharma Park in Ebonyi State was chosen by the Nigerian Association of Industrial Pharmacists because the state was found to be an attractive location for investments and had the necessary infrastructure available.

Ebonyi

The association claimed that Ebonyi State, in the South-East zone, was selected for the pharmaceutical center among other factors, including its magnificent land area, easy access to project sites, and contiguous nature.

Pharmacist Sam Ohuabunwa, the immediate past president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and chairman of the board of Salt City Pharma Park Development Company, revealed this to media on Tuesday during a meeting with Governor Francis Nwifuru in Abakaliki.

“We are here today to see Governor Nwifuru over the Salt City Pharma Park Development Company in conjunction with the Board, our partners, and investors,” he stated. An industrial hub called Salt City Pharma Park is being built in the Ntezi settlement of the Ishielu Local Government Area in the state of Ebonyi.

NAIP and the government came to a mutual understanding (or contract) to develop the project during the administration of the state’s most recent governor, Engr David Umahi. After obtaining the Certificate of Occupancy, we proceeded with the initial task of obtaining plans, drawings, layouts, and more geotechnical studies, resulting in the creation of a 100-hectare park.

But we haven’t had a chance to meet with the new governor to make sure we’re all on the same page since he took office. We are meeting with him today to inform him of our accomplishments and to ask for his ongoing support.

We also hope that he will provide us with extra comfort so that our investors, who are coming from all over the world, can feel at ease. In order to make Salt City Pharma Park an industrial destination in the pharmaceutical value chain, we also need to make sure the government supports us and offers infrastructural benefits to attract investment.

We had a productive conversation with the governor during which we informed him that today would be a good time to brief him. In the end, he promised that the state would not only assist us but also surpass our expectations and do everything more quickly than we anticipated. That gave us encouragement. In addition, he remarked, “They have made their own covenant in front of us to make sure nothing stops us.”

He noted that the Park would boost the state’s standing as a corporate destination and provide jobs for his people.

To be honest to you, we looked for chances in each of the six geopolitical zones, which encompasses the entire country, Ohuanbunwa continued.

To be honest, we only visited a few locations; to be more accurate, Ebonyi State took the initiative. Umahi, the governor at the time, was able to provide us with adequate soft landings and responded to our needs more quickly. Actually, he just led us around the town, letting us decide where we wanted to go.

He claimed that rather than selecting Ntezi, there was a location he believed we would have selected.

The decision was made based on proximity to an airport—even before the Ebonyi airport opened—and to Enugu, the capital city of the South-East zone. These were the lovely, accessible, and continuous land areas that we took into consideration. However, the then-governor had an advantage over the others at the time because of his sincerity and responsiveness.

The former Chairman of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria said, “The pharmaceutical terrain and trade do not respect geo-political boundaries, just as my chairman spoke at the meeting with the governor,” in response to a question about whether the investment would succeed in Ebonyi State given its location, size, and lean business viability.

Seventy percent of the goods we buy in Nigeria are made outside the country, although they do arrive. How much extra do the ones made in Nigeria cost? They will travel to various regions of the nation. For this reason, I mentioned having a decent road network and being close to the airport so that we could transport things. Products can be produced anywhere, but moving them around requires logistics.

“Is it of good quality? Should be the key question. Is it up to international standards as well? The PSN and NAIP are not businesspeople for this reason. However, they are the project’s organizers, bringing to the Park raw materials suppliers, engineering companies that produce pharmaceutical machinery, and other supporting organizations as well as regional and international pharmaceutical manufacturers. That is the project’s benefit.

In a nutshell, the benefit of the Park is that everyone will benefit from a single route that is built for them all.

Water that you supply will benefit everyone. Waste management is something you offer, and it benefits everyone. Nobody goes out of their way to provide a service since it is more affordable at the pharmacy hub (Park). Additionally, you might benefit from one another because there is not much of a distance between your supplier and your plant.

He claimed, “This is why I told the governor to create incentives,” in reference to businesses leaving Nigeria. Everything in the world runs on incentives. They are leaving because greater offers have been made to them by someone in other countries. And they will stay here if you provide them with something that is even “better.”

There will undoubtedly be more in the future. People pass away and new ones are born, as you are aware. There will be others. Making your state more competitive with your target audience is crucial. Furthermore, we think Ebonyi State is more eager for investment.

The project’s goal, according to board member Prof. Chimezie Anyakaora, who represents Bloom Public Health, is to establish a medium- and high-tech industrial park in the state.

“I am thrilled about the advancements made thus far in the Salt City Pharma Park project,” he declared. The idea of Pharma Park is to create a small, contemporary pharmaceutical industrial park where service providers, support service providers, and pharmaceutical enterprises of all sizes can share infrastructure and workstations.

The initiative is commendable since it would address the problems with the medicine supply chain and Nigeria’s rapidly increasing need for pharmaceuticals.
