30 Illegal Shops Are Demolished by the Ebonyi Government
The Capital City Development Commissioner, Mr. Sunday Inyima, told reporters during the demolition operation that the owners of the illegal structures had been duly informed before any action was taken.
He pointed out that the stores’ construction along the service road went against the new city’s master plan.
The commissioner added that they will soon start demolishing shanties, containers, buildings on waterways, and other unpermitted structures in the capital city.
“We believe that this is not normal; this is a service road, and individuals have started erecting shops here. The international market, where people can conduct business, is seen across from this location.
“According to our documentation, the proprietors did not obtain any authorization from the Ministry of Capital City. We gave them a “stop work and removal” notice in August 2023, but as you can see, they were unable to take it down. For that reason, we are here to assist them in doing so.
Some of the owners are well-known, while others are not. I’m not sure if I know all the owners, but when we wrote this, some of them called, and we told them that it wasn’t right and that they should take it down. To our utter amazement, the structures remained, which is why we are here now, following our August 2023 warning and notice, Inyima stated.
In order to prevent having their structures demolished, the commissioner advised developers to make sure they obtain government approval before establishing any structures.
