The bill to create a federal polytechnic in Ebonyi
On Wednesday, a bill proposing to create the Federal Polytechnic in Onueke, Ezza LGA of Ebonyi, passed the Senate on second reading.
This came after the bill’s sponsor, Kenneth Eze (APC-Ebonyi), presented the general ideas of the legislation during Wednesday’s plenary.

Speaking on the measure, Mr. Eze stated that it was initially read on August 1, 2023.
According to him, the school is an endeavor that might promote the development of human capital and give young people in Nigeria, and Ebonyi specifically, a secure future.
Even while he believed that education was still essential to a progressive society, he felt that more needed to be done to meet the skill-based educational demands of disadvantaged areas.
He claimed that polytechnics, which specialize in technical fields, ICT, and applied sciences, were well known for offering hands-on, skill-based education.
“Ebonyi State guarantees that the youth of this region have access to high-quality technical education by establishing a Federal Polytechnic in Onueke, Ezza South LGA.”
In an increasingly competitive labor market, he claimed that the technical education would allow students to gain the skills necessary for both technical competence and self-employment.
In his contribution, Jimoh Ibrahim (APC-Ondo) encouraged the federal government to ensure that science and technology education in Nigeria is driven and ensured by not only establishing the school but also federal polytechnics in each of the senatorial districts.
According to Mr. Ibrahim, there is a growing demand for more polytechnics in Nigeria to prepare the country’s youth for a future focused on science, technology, and skill development. This is because the country’s secondary school graduation rate is rising.
Given the large number of young people in the state seeking technical and scientific education, Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) asked for measures to guarantee that the school concentrates on the delivery of technical education in addition to supporting the bill.
Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano), the Deputy President of the Senate, who oversaw the plenary, forwarded the bill to the Senate Committee on Education and Tertiary Institutions for more legislative input, with a deadline of two weeks.
