On Sunday evening, September 10, Ndiigboworldwide was reported that players and supporters of the Ishielu Local Government Area team assaulted a referee at the conclusion of Francis Nwifuru’s cup final match.
According to Ndi-igboworldwide’s reporting, fans chased the referee as he fled the stadium in an attempt to kill him because of his allegedly bad refereeing.
When the governor stepped in to save the referee from the enraged fans who had overpowered the security guards who had been trying to protect him, everything went back to normal.
During the award ceremony, Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru spoke out against the attack, calling it “shameful and embarrassing.”
I was surprised by the players’ lack of professionalism.
Those who disagree with a referee’s call should report it to the appropriate authorities rather than confront the official themselves.
According to him, the sports commissioner had assured him that such brutality would never happen again, and that the perpetrator would still receive a response.
To prevent future attacks of this nature, the governor further stated that officials for future events will be brought in from outside the state.
Nobody on either team would be familiar with the referees.
However, he said, “the sports commissioner has shown his strength in organising such a competition, and we would continue providing opportunities to empower and unite our youths.”
The final score was Ebonyi LGA 2, Ishielu 1, and Ohaozara LGA 1, with Izzi taking third place.
