Abia NLC insists on strike amid Ikpeazu’s failed promise to pay workers their salary arrears

The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Saturday, vowed that it will not call off the ongoing strike as long as the State government has refused to pay workers their salary backlogs.

The union also threatened to continue the walkout until appropriate action is taken.

The State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Pascal Iheme, accused the outgoing governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, of reneging on his pledge to the union.

Last weekend, the State government promised to pay workers their owed wages starting Monday, May 15, 2023. It had, on the basis of the promise, urged the workers to call off their strike and resume work immediately.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) recently labeled Abia alongside Imo and Benue as states giving health workers “sleepless nights” due to non-payment of salaries.

However, Iheme revealed the reason the strike is still ongoing.

He said: “We have not reached any agreement whatsoever. The only way forward is for the government to pay us. We know they just have a few days to go but they must pay us.

“Nothing reasonable has been done. What they were doing was that they were handpicking those to pay. That, to us, is not reasonable. They must pay all they owe or else, the strike will continue.”
