On February 24, 2024, the Geometric Power Generation Company PLC and the state government will formally commission the electricity generating plant as part of their efforts to improve business operations and increase the availability of energy in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State.

When the plant is completely operational, Aba and the surrounding area should receive power from it.

President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is anticipated to inaugurate the power plant, according to Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture for the State of Abia, who revealed this information to reporters in Umuahia while taking questions.

Following this week’s Executive Council meeting, which was chaired by Governor Alex Otti, the commissioner, along with the State Commissioners for Land and Housing and Education, characterized the commissioning of a Geometric Power Plant as a realization of a long-held dream for the Abia State Government and its pioneers.

“The State Government has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the project is realized because our people will benefit when that plant comes on stream,” he said.

“The power project has shown the State government’s dedication to improving the state’s economic situation by promoting private sector investment in infrastructure.

“You are aware of the significance of that project for our people, since power has been a major issue for Aba and several other regions of the state. It would greatly benefit the business community, the environment, and the people who live there.

“A lot of things in Aba’s business climate will change once that facility is commissioned. It’s important to note that the Geometric Power Generation Company was born almost by accident. From the beginning, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, who served as the CEO and Managing Director of the now-defunct Diamond Bank PLC, was involved in the Geometric Power Project.

He is presently the governor of Abia State and will fortunately be in charge of the power plant’s commissioning in Aba. I’ll stop here so the governor may properly narrate the tale himself for maximum impact.

On security, the information Commissioner said efforts are on to enhance security around Umunneochi through the construction of a perimeter fence for the Lokpanta Market which will remain operational as a daily market. According to him, in line with its commitment to facilitating business activities, the government issued 200 Certificates of Occupancy (CoO) in January to property owners in the state, assuring that it will sustain the tempo.

The Abia Information Commissioner, who disclosed that renovation of three model schools selected in each of the three senatorial zones is ongoing, stated that the state government has directed principals and head teachers of public schools to refrain from renting out their premises for various events. “It has come to the notice of the state government that despite repeated directives to them to refrain from doing so, some principals and heads of schools still go ahead to do so. It causes a lot of distraction to the students and we want to remind those who engage in these unwholesome acts to stop forthwith since the extant laws in this regard will be enforced if they continue to breach that directive”.

The state government has also learned that some of the principals of the recently closed private schools have reopened the institutions on their own, failing to adhere to the minimal criteria and directives that were established for them.

“Therefore, we are taking this opportunity to warn everyone who has disregarded this to shut down those schools or prepare to face the full force of the law.”

The Commissioner of Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, cautioned during her remarks at the occasion that no school has the authority to impose additional fees beyond those that have been legally approved by the state government. She also urged parents to report any instances of this nature to the Ministry of Education.

She gave elementary school teachers who were dissatisfied with their pay from the previous government the assurance that it will be resolved shortly since efforts are being made in that direction.

Professor Uche therefore notified the citizens of the state government’s plan to carry out a project named “Needs Assessment,” stating that the purpose of the project is to hire science instructors and other specialists in important topics for state schools.

In a similar spirit, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, Commissioner for Lands and Housing, pledged during his speech on the planned Arungwa Trailer Park that the project will also bring in money for the State and ease traffic near the Umuika junction, Owerinta bridge, and Osisioma roundabout.

“It is a standard trailer park; it is not a settlement,” he said, adding that the initiative had nothing to do with RUGA as claimed. It is a commercial location.
