UPDATED: Soludo fires 21 chairmen of the Anambra transition committee
Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has fired the chairs of every transition committee in each of the state’s 21 local government districts.

This is stated in a letter written by Collins Nwabunwanne, the state commissioner for local government, chieftaincy, and community affairs, dated May 17, 2024, and headlined “Expiration of tenure and handover to Heads of Local Government Administrations (HLGAs).”
The directive will go into force on Monday, May 20, 2024.
“You are hereby directed to handover the affairs of your Local Government Council to the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), in your respective Local Government Councils, following the expiration of your tenure as Chairman of the Transition Committee,” the letter stated.
“This instruction is operative as of Monday, May 20, 2024. I am grateful for your contribution to the state.
“The Honorable Commissioner should receive all responses.”
According to PUNCH Online, Anambra State last held LG elections in 2014, at the conclusion of the administration headed by former Governor Peter Obi.
Caretaker committee chairs have led the local governments ever since.
January 2024 marked ten years since the last elections, following the terms of incumbent Soludo and another former governor, Willie Obiano.
Stakeholders, including monarchs, clerics, and citizens, urged Soludo to hold elections in the state’s 21 LGs during a forum held in December 2023 by the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Center in partnership with the African Centre for Leadership and Development.
They added that the non-elected officials’ actions are negatively affecting grassroots governance.
