How his death occurred
A video clip has been making the rounds on different WhatsApp groups, showing the victim lying lifeless and nude in a bathtub at his residence.
Some locals and supporters were heard in the video, which PREMIUM TIMES saw, claiming that what had transpired had to have been an assassination.
Premium Times was informed by community sources that the group of thugs, estimated to be around 15, broke into Mr. Onyima’s flat on Friday night and fatally shot him.
According to one of the sources, who went by the name Ejiofor, the shooters were disguised during the assault.
Mr. Ejiofor stated of the victim, “It had not been long since he was elected as our president-general.”
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State police spokesperson, verified the event to PREMIUM TIMES when called on Saturday afternoon.
After learning of the attack, police officers were sent to the neighborhood, according to Mr. Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police.
According to a police spokesperson, upon arrival at the site, the officers “found the man in a pool of blood.”
“With the assistance of some family members, the deceased’s body has been recovered and deposited at the morgue,” he stated.
According to Mr. Ikenga, the police were looking into the death.
In order to find the murderers, he continued, the police were collaborating with a few witnesses and locals.
An increase in assaults
Similar to other states in the southeast of Nigeria, Anambra State’s security has gotten worse due to an increase in armed attacks.
Facilities, government employees, and security agencies are frequently the targets of the attacks.
Less than two weeks had passed since Jude Oguejiofor, a former Anambra State candidate for the House of Representatives, was assassinated by gunmen.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have been blamed by the Nigerian government for the deadly attacks that have occurred in the area. However, the gang has consistently denied having anything to do with the attacks.
Leading the push for an independent state of Biafra, which it wants split from areas of south-south and southeast Nigeria, is IPOB.
