Suspect from Anambra dies after falling off a moving police car
According to reports, the incident took place on Wednesday along Port Harcourt Road and the Ogbo-Ogwu Drug Market in Onitsha, the state capital of Anambra.
This was confirmed by a video that is presently popular on social media, in which the narrator describes how the victim was taken into custody by police after they broke into the market and confiscated some items from the vendors.
The voice on the video claimed, “The victim, in handcuffs, fell from the vehicle and hit his head on the tarred road and “killed” shortly after the arrest, while the police officers were speeding off out of the market in their vehicle, with the seized items.”
The video also showed the man’s lifeless body lying on the ground with handcuffs on him, surrounded by onlookers who were filming the tragedy, mourning, and taking pictures.
DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the state police public relations officer, acknowledged having viewed the viral video when he was asked about the development.
Ikenga added that he had also sent the footage to the Onitsha Area Commander so that it could be looked into further, particularly with regard to the incident’s circumstances and the purported police involvement.
He claimed that the authority had requested calm and guaranteed that the perpetrators of this heinous deed will always be exposed.
In the meantime, the command has asked for calm and promised that the police will reveal those responsible for the inhumane conduct. “I am aware of the trending video and I have escalated it to the Area Commander in Onitsha for investigation, especially on the allegations that our officers were involved,” he added.
