Attack on a nurse: Enugu Assembly takes action to control masquerade activities
An ad hoc committee appointed by the Enugu State House of Assembly is tasked with devising workable solutions to control masquerade activities inside the state.

This comes after a bunch of masquerades in the state’s Ihe-Owerre, Nsukka Local Government Area, mistreated a female nurse named Ms. Blessing Ogbonna.
The proposal made by Mr. Malachy Onyechi to address the violations of human rights, threats against lives, and property damage by masquerades in the Nsukka West Constituency resulted in the formation of the ad hoc committee on Thursday in Enugu.
The masquerade threat in Onyechi’s constituency, Nsukka West, is concerning, since many people have either died or been seriously hurt as a result of it.
The politician claimed that both those inside and outside the state have publicly condemned and expressed outrage about Ogbonna’s recent mistreatment.
“Mr. Speaker, a situation involving Ms. Blessing Ogbonna, a young nurse, who was attacked by masquerades in Nsukka has been brought to my notice. She was hospitalized after the violent incident.
“I have contacted her in order to evaluate the harm and provide my assistance. However, there is a wealth of documentary documentation on the atrocities committed by mistaken masquerades and their followers, so this wouldn’t be the first time.
The seven masquerades were taken into custody and accused with assault, extortion, and blocking a federal route in a Nsukka magistrate court.
In order to protect parties from abuse, this motion seeks to harmonize masquerade practices and standards as they relate to cultural exhibitions, entertainment, and commercial endeavors.
“Situations where masquerade has been unfairly treated by individuals, organized organizations, or security authorities are not overlooked in this cry for concern.
Therefore, this move is aimed to integrate systems and practices rather than to witch-hunt any individual or group, according to Onyechi.
The congressman also denounced the practice of obstructing traffic to keep employees—such as nurses on vital service—from carrying out their jobs.
Mr. Pius Ezugwu, representing Nsukka East Constituency, supported the motion and disclosed that the masquerade problem had almost led to hostilities between two groups in his constituency.
