Police deny employee protest over unpaid salary

This was disclosed on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, in response to a report by an online news source.

There have been rumours of a planned police protest in Lagos that would culminate in a strike over six months of allegedly unpaid salary.

The police personnel allegedly claimed that only grade levels 03,04,05,06 and a small number of grade level 07 policemen were paid in arrears, while grade levels 08, 09, 10, and 11 officers were not paid.

In addition, they stated that senior officers, ranging from Assistant Commissioners of Police to Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba, were paid four months behind schedule.

“They began making payments last week, but ceased doing so on Tuesday, January 4, 2023.” Nobody can say this is the reason for the silence, a source had alleged.

The story, citing an unnamed senior police officer, states, “Senior inspectors from the Lagos police command want to demonstrate at the Lagos command Headquarters on Monday over the unpaid six-month arrears.”

“Police officers who did not get their six-month salary arrears are organising WhatsApp groups in order to recruit participants for the protest on Monday in Lagos.

“Two weeks have passed with no contact from police authority regarding the arrears, and Mobile Police officers are threatening to protest; therefore, the IGP summoned all Squadron Commanders for retraining, but it was a warning; not training.”

However, on Saturday, in a series of tweets, Force PRO Adejobi refuted the charges, stating, “Most of the time, I laugh when I read what some bloggers and news outlets write or publish about policing in Nigeria.

“At times, this news appears sponsored since it lacks professional touches and substance. They are embellished with and comprise lies, unsubstantiated claims, assumptions, and the like.”

“The Police Department is not a labour union or organisation.”

its personnel congregate and debate on protest or strike. It is impossible.

“As a regimental organisation, we are cognizant of certain ‘don’ts’ within the NPF. There is a news platform whose name sounds like or resembles a desert that will always seek to agitate the NPF and our nation with its fake news, unsubstantiated claims, unguided arguments, and fallacies.

“In the police, we are disciplined and uphold our principles and traditions and ideologies.

“We applaud the changes made to our welfare and working conditions by the current administration.” It is extraordinary, and I have no doubt that police personnel will soon receive other gifts.”
