Chizoba Aniefuna and his two sons were killed when their one-story residence with penthouse fell in Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, Nnewi North, Anambra State.
Unnamed relative of the individual who was also trapped in the under-construction building was rescued and rushed to the St. Felix Hospital in Nnewi for treatment.
Mr. Chris Obiora, Chairman of the Transition Committee of Nnewi North Local Government Area, and representatives of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) have visited the scene.
As the excavator brought to rescue the victims broke down at the scene, manual labourers had already arrived on a mission of rescue.
The Anambra State Chairman of COREN, Engr. Victor Meju, attributed the incident to poor foundation, poor concrete mixture, poor quality of materials, poor wearing cost capacity, nonconformity to standard, and lack of approval from relevant regulatory agencies, while addressing journalists after the dead bodies were extracted from the rubble.
Meju ordered the site to be cordoned off and added that the building’s proprietor, Mr. Chukwunafu Anamanjo, would be questioned to assist with the investigation.
Obiora, the chairman of the Transition Committee of the Nnewi North Local Government Area, urged the populace to always employ certified Engineers and other pertinent personnel in the construction industry, noting that monitoring teams were also necessary to ensure strict adherence to the standards.
