The state government of Enugu has declared its determination to restart the N4.5 billion Akwuke water project.
According to Felix Nnamani, the commissioner for water resources, the revitalization of this project in the Enugu South Local Government Area is imminent.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Nnamani made this proclamation on Thursday in Enugu, following a meeting with the water resources committee of the State House of Assembly, chaired by Obiajulu Ugwu, and the Ministry of Water Resources.
Nnamani stated that once finished, the project, which was originally overseen by the Anambra-Imo River Commission, will offer an adequate water supply for the people living in the Enugu metropolitan area.
He said that a lot of work is being done to get the Adada water project up and running so that it can meet the demands of the thousands of people in Nsukka who don’t have access to running water.
Enugu’s government is working to increase water availability.
Nnamani further mentioned that in the short term, the state government is purchasing high-quality pumps and other equipment needed to restore the Oji River and Ninth Mile water facilities.
He pointed out that Governor Peter Mbah is keeping his word by distributing 60,000 cubic metres of water each day through the Ninth Mile water facility.
Nnamani also expressed regret that most taps in the state’s 473 communities are broken and promised that they will be fixed and made operational again as soon as possible.
Maintenance of Enugu State’s Water Infrastructure Must Be Sustainable
WaterAid Nigeria’s programme monitoring evaluation officer, Eteta Eta, has asked the government to put more resources towards preserving and maintaining the country’s current water infrastructure.
He said that the lack of maintenance and protection of water installations was to blame for the abysmal water quality in several areas of the state.
Eta urged the aided communities to make it a habit to safeguard water infrastructure to provide a steady and reliable water supply.
