
Irene Onwuka, a prominent youth activist and gender advocate, has been appointed Vice President, West Africa at the Pan-African Youth Union (PYU) to oversee the organization’s youth development initiatives in the West African sub-region.
The Pan-African Youth Union (PYU) is the official voice of African youth and serves as the supreme coordinating body for National Youth Councils. With its headquarters located in Rabat, Morocco, the Organization enjoys special observation status at all African Heads of State and Government Meetings in addition to consultative status with the African Union.

Irene Onwuka, the first young woman from Nigeria to hold a position at the PYU Executive, responded to her victory by thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, the Honorable Minister of State for Youth Development, and Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, for their support and privilege.
“I pledge never to disappoint Amb. Sukubo Sera-Igbe Sukubo, President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, and I am incredibly grateful that he thought me worthy of this role. I am very grateful to the Honorable Ministers who have enabled me to become the first female young leader from Nigeria to hold a position at PYU.
I will never take for granted the advantage that has been provided to me. I would also want to take this opportunity to thank Sen. Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, for his unwavering fatherly support during the entire process. She said so.
“I sincerely thank Amb. Sukubo Sera-Igbe Sukubo, President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, for considering me deserving of this position, and I promise never to let him down. I am incredibly appreciative of the Honorable Ministers for making it possible for me to join PYU as the first female young leader from Nigeria to have a seat.
I will always be grateful for the benefit that has been given to me. Additionally, I would want to use this occasion to express my gratitude to Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his steadfast, fatherly support throughout the whole process. She stated as much.
The resignation, which was sent in a letter dated February 2, 2024, to the Honorable Minister, asked for an urgent replacement. Following the President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria’s proposal, the Honorable Minister promptly informed the Pan-African Youth Union Headquarters of the replacement.
