Governor Otti stated that despite the Super Eagles’ inability to win the title, the players gave it their all and succeeded in enhancing the country’s reputation as a dominant force in African
football.
In the final of the biannual competition, which took place within the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, the capital of Cote d’Ivoire, on Sunday, host Cote d’Ivoire overcame a late deficit to defeat Nigeria 2-1.
Inspired by the presence of the Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara, the home fans controlled every square inch of the stadium. Governor Otti praised the Super Eagles for their unwavering display of fortitude in the face of this opposition.
In particular, he commended the three Abia State sons who were on the Super Eagles squad that competed in the AFCON 2023: Frank Ogochukwu Onyeka, Kenneth Omeruo, and Samuel Chukwueze.
Just before the game’s first half ended, Troost Ekong, the team captain, gave Nigeria the lead with a header, and the governor commended Chukwueze for assisting him in doing so.
Governor Otti complimented the team’s technical staff and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for their efforts that helped propel Nigeria to the AFCON finals, in addition to thanking Nigerians for their tremendous support of the Super Eagles throughout the campaign.
The Nigeria Super Eagles defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16, the Antelopes of Angola in the quarterfinal, and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the semifinal before losing to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the championship game after emerging victorious from the group stage.
