In Imo, the Army and Navy killed five IPOB fighters.

Five combatants from the Indigenous People of Biafra were slain by Nigerian Army and Navy personnel during a gunfight at Ejemekuru in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

The clash between the army and IPOB fighters in the state’s Orsu LG took place a few days prior to the meeting with the fighters from IPOB.

During the operation, the military killed one IPOB fighter and took from their hideouts three IEDs, one Toyota Highlander SUV, one Hilux car, and eight rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

One AK-47 weapon and two pump-action semi-automatic rifles were among the items found by the forces during the joint operations, according to a statement released on Wednesday by Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations.

The statement said, “Combined Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy troops have neutralized five armed fighters in a firefight that ensued at Ejemekuru in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State during a successful raid operation conducted into identified IPOB/ESN camps on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.”

“The valiant forces discovered a sizable cache of hazardous weapons after crushing the Armed separatists’ resistance with tremendous gunfire. These weapons included one AK-47 rifle, two pump-action semi-automatic rifles, one locally made pistol, two magazines, and three rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition. Two motorcycles, two cell phones, and a camouflage jungle helmet were also found by the military.

In addition, Onyema said that fifteen victims who had been abducted during counter-insurgency operations in the Northwest had been freed.

In a different operation that day, 15 kidnap victims were successfully freed from captivity in the Tsohuwar Tasha region of Kaura Namoda Local Government region in Zamfara State by forces sent for counter-insurgency operations in North West Nigeria.

“The attentive troops were quick to respond to a distress call and mobilized to the location. They engaged the kidnappers in a gunfight, overwhelming them and forcing them to flee into the bush with their captives. Every abductee was found safe and sound.
