Delta verifies water contamination in the village of Ukwu-Nzu
the contamination of the river more than a week ago; in response to the community’s worry, it was seen that the once-pure water had taken on a brownish hue, causing the surrounding flora to dry up.
It was claimed that Mosra Energy Limited’s coal mining operations along the river’s edge were the cause of the contamination.
However, the coal mining business refuted any participation and attributed the river’s coloration to the laterite that NEWMAP had applied to the area three years prior for erosion management.
But in the state capital of Asaba, Mr. Jamani Ejiro, the state commissioner for the environment, informed us that a sample of the water had been taken for analysis.
Residents and natives of Ukwu-Nzu were given the assurance by Jamani that a comprehensive investigation of the water and effluent will be carried out to determine the reason for the coloration of the river’s water.
According to him, the visit was necessary because of petitions from Ukwu-Nzu natives who accused mining company MOSRA Energy Limited of contaminating and discoloring the river.

The town stated, “We have planned for another lab for our water analysis independently, to be able to checkmate whatever the state will produce,” in addition to announcing that it has hired an outside expert.
Mr. Kaikenechukwu Okolie, Ikechukwu Ezedunor, a community native, clarified that the river remained uncontaminated even after NEWMAP finished its erosion control efforts in the area.
They argued that, contrary to what the coal mining business claimed, there isn’t any rain that might be bringing the laterite into the river.
