The government of Abia warns citizens not to drink alcohol as the heat wave intensifies.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, the Commissioner for Environment, voiced grave worries about the apparent changes in weather patterns that he linked to the consequences of climate change.
The statement claims that there has been an upsurge in heat waves throughout the day and at night.
“The adverse effect of the current situation ranges from dehydration which can lead to fainting, contact with chicken pox, heat rashes, and mental stress,” the warning continued.
According to the statement, “skin cancer, meningitis, and in the worst case death are also associated with heat waves.”
The statement reiterated the advice given by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on how to get ready for changes in the weather.
In order to avoid problems, the statement urged locals to closely follow the advice of specialists.
Thus, in order to lessen the threat posed by heat waves, the Abia State Government recommends Nde Abia and its citizens to follow the advice of the experts.
The recommendations state that they should stay hydrated and drink more water; abstain from alcohol and caffeinated beverages; limit their intake of foods high in protein because these foods increase metabolic activity; stay inside between 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.; take a cold bath before bed; and constantly check their blood pressure.
For the past few weeks, there have been more and more heat waves and gloomy weather.
