In an effort to foster better communication between electricity consumers and distribution companies (DisCos), the Federal Government has taken a commendable step by introducing a Power Outage Reporting app. This innovative tool empowers consumers to promptly report any disruptions they experience in their metres or transformers. By embracing such technological solutions, we can enhance the efficiency and reliability of our energy systems, ultimately paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
During the app launch in Abuja, Sanusi Garba, the Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), expressed NERC’s commitment to promoting clean energy initiatives. He announced that NERC intends to utilise the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) as a pilot company, with the aim of eventually implementing this system across other DisCos in the coming weeks.
In his remarks, Christopher Ezeafulukwe, the Managing Director of AEDC, highlighted the crucial role played by the DisCos as the final link in the electricity supply chain. Drawing an analogy to a relay race, he emphasised that the DisCos are the ones closest to the customers and often bear the brunt of any challenges that arise.
According to him, the app is a remarkable outcome of collaboration, and it promises to be a mutually beneficial situation for all parties involved.
From the perspective of customers, it’s a win-win situation as clean energy solutions are incredibly user-friendly. The sustainable platform has been created and it is now our responsibility to utilise it effectively for the benefit of clean energy.
As a clean energy advocate, it is our privilege to be chosen by the commission as a pioneer in the adoption of alternative energy sources.
The President of Electricity Consumer Protection, Mr. Kunle Olubiyo, strongly emphasises the need for NERC to diligently monitor and address the concerns raised by consumers. It is crucial that we do not solely rely on the DisCos for monitoring, given their disappointing track record in performance.
